Kevin F. Bonner, M.D. Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon
Specializes in Shoulder and Knee Surgery

Kevin Bonner, M.D.
Kevin Bonner

At the Jordan-Young Institute, Dr. Kevin Bonner primarily specializes in the treatment of injuries and disorders involving the shoulder and knee. He focuses on the least invasive contemporary treatment strategies that are based on the latest scientific evidence available. Dr. Bonner has a combination of extensive experience and success with the drive to never be complacent and to always strive to improve. Dr Bonner is extremely active outside his clinical practice where he participates in international educational conferences, cutting-edge research, and the development of innovation within shoulder and knee surgery. This has led him to become a key opinion leader “KOL” in these areas today.

Prior to joining the Jordan-Young Institute, Dr. Bonner completed his training at the Hospital for Special Surgery (Cornell Medical Center) in New York (ranked #1 in the United States). Subsequently he and his family came to the Hampton Roads area to serve as an Orthopedic Surgeon for the US Navy. During his Naval career Dr Bonner was Chief of Sports Medicine at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, as well as Orthopedic Surgeon for the US Navy SEALs. After completing his tenure with the Navy in 2002 he joined the Jordan-Young Institute.

Although he has achieved many accolades locally and regionally, most don’t know the amount of time he spends in the pursuit of contributing to both education and innovation in the field of orthopedic surgery. He is currently considered a Key Opinion Leader “KOL” in the field of arthroscopic and related surgery of the shoulder and knee. He is currently on the Presidential Line (2nd Vice President) and executive Board of Directors for the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). He has also recently been on the Board of Trustees for the Arthroscopy Journal (JBOT) from 2022-2024. In the past several years he has been honored to serve as Program Chair or Co-Chair for the combined 2021 American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM)/AANA Annual Meeting in Nashville, the AANA 2022 Annual Meeting in San Francisco and the Orthopedic Summit & Evolving Techniques Conference in Las Vegas (2018-2021,2024) and Boston (2022,2023) as well as other national shoulder and knee courses. Participating as chairman, program director or expert faculty for many academic national and international orthopedic conferences has allowed him to evaluate the latest techniques and devices that are being developed throughout the world at their earliest stages. In fact, Dr. Bonner has helped develop some of the implants, techniques and procedures currently used today.

Locally Dr Bonner is a Professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School where he enjoys both clinical teaching and participating in multiple research projects with students and colleagues. He also currently serves as Director of the Jordan Research Foundation which has become quite productive. Additionally, Dr Bonner is on the Board of Directors for LifeNet Health in Virginia Beach.

Dr. Bonner is principally focused on the treatment of problems prior to joint replacement surgery in the shoulder and knee. Whether it’s an injury to an elite athlete or an older individual who simply cannot get a good night’s sleep due to a rotator cuff tear, patients can be confident that they will be treated with the most modern, verified techniques. He has written numerous articles, medical textbook chapters and lectures on topics including arthroscopic shoulder surgery, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, meniscus and articular cartilage treatment & repair, ligament reconstruction and other biologic treatments. He stresses that vetting new procedures based on scientific methodology and not commercial hype is an important component to his responsibility as a physician.

Dr. Bonner takes care of many of the region’s elite athletes from high school through the professional level. In addition, professional athletes from the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), as well as college athletes, now travel to Virginia Beach to obtain consults, care and surgery with Dr. Bonner. Patients also travel from foreign countries to undergo shoulder and knee surgery with him, and this can be arranged thru his office staff.

Dr. Bonner is the Head Team Orthopedic Surgeon for the Old Dominion University Women's Soccer team, Men's Baseball team and Women's Basketball team. He also took care of the ODU Wrestling Team for over a decade until the program recently ended.

Dr. Bonner is assisted by Abby Hoobler PA-C, Neil Harrison, PA-C, and Allison Hetrick, ATC, OTC.
